The lives and works of 80 of "the best-known, highest-praised, scariest, funniest, and most-promising authors of tales of future worlds, alternative universes, psychological spine-tinglers, and more" are covered in this two-volume set. These writers extend from Mary Shelley and Robert Louis Stevenson to Stephen King and Anne Rice. YA authors such as Natalie Babbitt and Laurence Yep are also covered. Vital information and a black-and-white portrait begin each article. A 1,500-word biographical essay follows that gives specifics on early life, education, career, and the unique characteristics of the genre writer. Brief quotes from the authors or their critics are disbursed throughout the entries. Sidebars include short annotated lists of some of the authors' best works, photos of either a book jacket or movie still, and information about movie adaptations. Suggested sources for further reading are found at the end of each entry. Lists of Hugo and Nebula award winners and an author-title-subject index conclude each volume....
